Anusara Yoga
The Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness underlies the methodology of teaching Anusara yoga. Consequently, Anusara yoga teachers, first and foremost, look for the good in all things, especially within themselves and their students. Anusara yoga teachers help enhance and reveal the beauty and Divine qualities that are already present in the students' poses. They do not try to "fix" or "correct" students' alignment. Instead, they are dedicated to serving each student and helping them unveil their innate goodness, worthiness, and Supreme nature. Furthermore, Anusara yoga teachers are committed to helping build and empower each student's self-esteem, while inspiring light-heartedness, playfulness, and joyful creativity within the yoga practice.
Teachers apply an elegant, concise set of alignment principles called the “Universal Principles of Alignment”throughout an Anusara yoga class. A central idea within the Universal Principles of Alignment is the 3 A’s: Attitude, Alignment, and Action. This foundational concept within the Anusara method infuses every pose with a meaningful intention connected to the grand purposes of yoga, creates awareness of specific postural alignment, and fosters balanced action between stability and freedom. The first Principle is ‘opening to Grace’, while Muscular Energy and Organic Energy are the two complementary forces that provide each pose with balanced action between stability and freedom. Secondary alignment principles include Spirals and Loops, which help to bring refinement and precision to each pose.
Ultimately, each student leaves an Anusara yoga class feeling better about him or herself, empowered and delighted by the revelation of his or her Divine nature (Chidananda).
Kundalini Yoga (also known as the yoga of awareness) uncoils the infinite creative potential within. Through a combination of dynamic postures, exercises, breath, mantra (sound) and meditation, each system of the body (muscular, glandular, digestive, circulatory) is stimulated, balanced and integrated to enhance our experience and abundance as more conscious human beings while sustaining us in releasing blockages caused by negative attitudes or feelings. We tap into the Kundalini energy within us, that dormant energy that lies at the base of the spine, which when activated, opens the body, cleanses the mind, uplifts the spirit and connects us with our higher consciousness, our boundlessness.
Hatha Yoga The word hatha is a combination of the Sanskrit words for “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha). Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic yogic path, including moral disciplines, physical postures (asanas), purification procedures (shatkriyas), poses (mudras), yogic breathing (pranayama), and meditation. Hatha Yoga is a broad category of all the physical yoga, which includes all of the following systems and styles. Dynamic Hatha Yoga means a vigorously active physical yoga.
Ashtanga Led Yoga is the hatha yoga system developed by Pattabhi Jois from the teachings of Krishnamacharya and consists of a specific and complete series of yoga poses and holds synchronized with breath. Movements are meant to flow together so as to heat the body and produce a detoxifying sweat. These classes are led by the instructor, rather than Mysore style.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga (also known as Power Yoga or Flow Yoga) is a westernized and more free-form hatha style combining the breath-movement synchronizing of Ashtanga Vinyasa with additional techniques and approaches, based on the creative direction of the instructor. Classes will typically involve a flowing movement through a series of poses – building heat, suppleness, and stamina – and paced either moderately or vigorously depending on the level.
Pranayama Practices are techniques that complete what hatha yoga begins, and are intended to take students to the doorstep of meditation. Classes will include practice and refinement of subtle and powerful exercises for the activating and directing of prana (life force).
